Better Life Hospital Ltd, located in Rampura, is known as a modern, multi-disciplinary tertiary care hospital in Dhaka. Its ICU is a critical component of its service, designed to provide advanced life support and continuous monitoring for patients with severe or life-threatening illnesses.

Key Features of the ICU

  1. State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: The ICU is equipped with modern (European Standard) medical technology to handle complex critical cases. This typically includes:
    • Multi-parameter Monitors: For continuous tracking of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation.
    • Ventilators: Advanced mechanical ventilators to support patients with respiratory failure. (European Machines)
    • Defibrillators and Crash Carts: For emergency resuscitation.
    • Infusion Pumps: For precise delivery of medications.
    • Central Oxygen and Suction Lines: Ensuring immediate availability at every bed.
  2. High Dependency Unit (HDU): In addition to the main ICU, the hospital often has a Step-down or High Dependency Unit. This is for patients who are stable enough to leave the ICU but still require a higher level of monitoring and nursing care than a general ward can provide.
  3. Infection Control: The ICU follows strict infection prevention and control protocols to minimize the risk of hospital-acquired infections. This includes restricted access, hand hygiene stations, and isolated beds for specific infectious cases.

Medical Team

The ICU service is managed by a multidisciplinary team available 24/7:

  • Intensivists: Qualified critical care specialists who lead the ICU team. There consultants specialized in CCM (Critical Care Medicine).
  • Critical Care Nurses: Highly trained nurses with a low nurse-to-patient ratio (typically 1:2 or 1:1 for the most critical patients).
  • Consultants: Specialist doctors (Cardiologists, Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Nephrologists, etc.) who visit the ICU to manage specific aspects of a patient's condition.
  • Support Staff: Respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, and dietitians who are integral to patient recovery.

Visiting Hours & Patient Support

ICUs generally have very strict visiting policies to ensure rest and minimize infection risk.

  • Typical Visiting Schedule: Usually limited to short periods, 10-20 times a day (e.g., 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM). This is subject to change based on the patient's condition.
  • Communication: The medical team usually updates the family twice daily on the patient's progress.

RADIOLOGY & IMAGING

The Radiology and Imaging Department at Better Life Hospital Ltd is a critical diagnostic wing, designed to support the hospital's multi-disciplinary approach. It aims to provide high-quality images for accurate diagnosis, utilizing both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation technology.

Overview

The Radiology and Imaging Department at Better Life Hospital Ltd is a critical diagnostic wing, designed to support the hospital's multi-disciplinary approach. It aims to provide high-quality images for accurate diagnosis, utilizing both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation technology. The department is located on the 2nd floor of the hospital Building.

Key Modalities

The department is usually divided into several sections to cater different diagnostic needs:

1. Digital X-Ray

  • Service: General radiography for bone fractures, chest infections (Pneumonia/TB), abdominal obstructions, and dental imaging.
  • Technology: The hospital uses Digital Radiography (DR) systems, which reduce radiation exposure compared to old analog films and provide instant image availability for the radiologist.

2. Ultrasound (USG)

  • Service: A non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique.
  • Types Offered:
    • Whole Abdomen: To check the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
    • Obstetric (OB/GYN): For fetal well-being, growth scans, and pelvic pathologies.
    • Doppler Studies: To assess blood flow in major vessels (carotid arteries, leg veins for DVT, renal arteries).
    • Small Parts: Thyroid, breast, scrotum, and musculoskeletal scans.

3. Echocardiography (Echo)

  • Service: While often managed by the Cardiology department, it is a key imaging service. It uses ultrasound to create pictures of the heart.
  • Types:
    • 2D Echo: To see the structure of the heart chambers and valves.
    • Doppler Echo: To measure blood flow velocity and pressure across heart valves.
    • Stress Echo: (If available) to check for blockages under physical stress.

4. CT Scan (Computed Tomography)

  • Service: Provides cross-sectional images of the body. It is much more detailed than X-ray and is crucial for trauma, cancer staging, and brain imaging.
  • Technology: Better Life Hospital is equipped with a modern Multi-slice CT Scanner (likely 64-slice or higher). This allows for:
    • Quick Scans: Reducing motion artifacts and the need for sedation.
    • CT Angiography: Visualizing blood vessels to look for aneurysms or blockages.
    • High-Resolution Chest Imaging: For detailed lung pathology (like COVID-19 assessment or interstitial lung disease).

5. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

  • Service: The gold standard for imaging soft tissues. It is essential for brain tumors, spinal cord issues, joint injuries (ligaments/meniscus), and detailed pelvic imaging.
  • Technology: The hospital features a high-field MRI machine (likely 1.5 Tesla). Key features usually include:
    • Closed Bore MRI: Provides the highest image quality.
    • Specialized Sequences: Such as MRCP (for bile ducts), MRV/MRA (for veins/arteries), and spectroscopy.

6. Mammography

  • Service: Dedicated breast imaging for screening and diagnostic purposes. This is vital for the early detection of breast cancer. Modern machines use low-dose radiation and compression techniques for patient comfort.

Service Quality & Patient Care

  • 24/7 Emergency Service: X-ray, Ultrasound, and CT Scan services are generally available 24 hours a day for emergency and trauma cases.
  • Contrast Studies: The department performs specialized studies where a contrast dye is administered (orally, rectally, or intravenously) to highlight specific organs (e.g., IVU for kidneys, CT with contrast for tumors, Barium swallow/meal/enema).
  • PACS System: The hospital uses a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) . This means images are stored digitally. Doctors can view them on computers anywhere in the hospital instantly, and patients can receive their reports on CDs or via digital formats rather than just films.
  • Qualified Team: Services are provided by a team of Consultant Radiologists (Medical doctors specialized in image interpretation), Medical Physicists (ensuring machine safety and dosage), and skilled Radiologic Technologists.

Preparation for Patients

If you plan to visit for an imaging service, here are general guidelines:

  • X-ray: No special preparation. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers/buttons.
  • Ultrasound (Abdomen): Usually requires fasting (no eating/drinking) for 6-8 hours prior.
  • Ultrasound (Pelvic/OB): Often requires a full bladder. Drink water and avoid urinating 1 hour before the scan.
  • CT / MRI with Contrast: You will be asked about allergies (especially to iodine), kidney function, and (for MRI) any metallic implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants, etc.). Fasting is often required for contrast CT scans.

Contact & Location

  • Location: Radiology department is typically on the Ground Floor or Lower Ground Floor of the hospital for easy access.
  • Central Number: +880-2-55039451-4
  • Emergency/Ambulance: +880 1708-099222
